Holiday Mom: Laura

Holiday Mom: LauraTo my dear Holiday Child,

The air is turning crisp, and I start thinking about winter…

Christmas is my favorite holiday.  Decorating our tree is a favorite tradition.  My son enjoys choosing his favorite ornaments and putting them in just the right spot on the tree.  You can look through our boxes of ornaments and find one that speaks to you, then find just the right spot where you can see it all season.  Each ornament reminds me of a moment — a time when I was a child, a time when my son was little, a trip we took somewhere special.  The ornament you choose to hang will always be associated with you, and I’ll be happy every time I see it.

I sing in a choir, and on Christmas Eve we sing lots of beautiful music that fills my heart with joy.  On Christmas Day, my mom, my brother and his family, and my husband’s family all come over for a big dinner in the afternoon.  After we open presents, I start the turkey and the other foods.  The house fills with the wonderful smells of good food.  We have turkey, stuffing, roasted vegetables, sweet potatoes, rolls, and three pies!  My brother and his family are vegetarians, so I also make another dish that’s vegetarian (which I also often eat).  I’m sure you will find something you like to eat, and I hope you will eat a lot — we always have leftovers that you can enjoy for days.

After we’ve eaten, we open presents and talk.  The house is cozy, the tree lights are on, and we’re all stuffed with good food.  Eventually everyone else leaves and it’s just us — we read a book we got for Christmas, or watch a movie together.  I love getting together with lots of people, but I also love just hanging out with my husband and son. We’ll all be gathered in the living room, and I’m thankful you’re there, too.

I love having you be part of our family at Christmas, a time when we celebrate family and traditions.  You bring your own unique talents and hobbies and sense of humor and wisdom to our gathering!  You are always welcome to join us and tell us what you are up to.  Home is togetherness, and you are part of our being together.  I’m so glad you could be with us this holiday season.  You are special and loved.

Love always,

Mom Laura

    Dear Mama Laura,

Thank you so much for these kind words, I feel so loved. Being a person who is trans during these holidays is hard, especially with a big (unsupportive) family as my own. I’ve lost lots of people this year, but I’m trying my best to stay happy and your accepting words are being a blessing. You are truly an amazing person.

    • Mom Laura says:

      Dear PJ,
It’s quiet now and I can see you sitting here with us, enjoying the tree and the time together. You are strong and wonderful, and I’m glad you are here just as you are. Mom hugs – I care about you and will keep you in my thoughts.

  4. Martha says:

    Dear Mom Laura,
There are many ways I feel I don’t connect with people, from the variety of mental illnesses I have to having a girlfriend, to politics. But…I also sing in a choir, two in fact, and when I’m singing at Christmas Eve service, I’ll be thinking of you.

    • Mom Laura says:

      Dear Martha,
Music fills my heart — I’m glad you sing, and I’ll think of you tonight as I’m singing. Music also makes me feel connected, and I hope you feel that way when you sing. I feel connected to you — I care about you and want you to have a wonderful Christmas! Mom hugs to you — I’ll be thinking of you.

Dear holiday momma. Thank you for these loving words. I wish I was excited for Christmas this year. It’s always a downer. I’ve never had a good one that I can remember. There’s always something going wrong or something that ruins the holidays for me. But reading this gave me hope. Made me feel loved and important. Thank you.

    • Mom Laura says:

      Dear Seantal,
I hope that someday you have the Christmas that you’ve missed. In the meantime, you are loved — I care about you and want you to have the Christmas you deserve! Mom hugs to you — I’ll be thinking about you today and beyond. You matter, and I care.

  6. Cindi says:

    Dear mama,
I wish I can say I’m doing well on this Christmas Eve, but I just can’t. I lost a lot of people this year and I lost another just this month. He was my best friend. I never understood how when someone dies the would just keeps moving on, it’s like im slow motion and everything has moved faster. My dad (the abusive one) disowned me, my mother which I just met for the first time has a non- Operatable tumor and is very sick. I’m on my last leg I don’t know what to do anymore.

    • Mom Laura says:

      Dear Cindi,
I’m so sorry to hear of all the troubles you’re having to deal with. It sounds painful and lonely. Know that I care about you and hope that things go better in the new year. I’m sending mom hugs to you, your mother, and your friends. You are strong, and even though it’s not right that your strength is being tested, you will be okay. I’m thinking of you. You are loved.
