Welcome My Adopted Sibling,
Happy Holidays!! I am excited to make you part of my holiday season this year. I have a large family and Christmas is our favorite holiday. My family comes from Latin America so we celebrate Christmas slightly different. However, I think you will enjoy celebrating it with us.
First of all, you would need to help us make our traditional Guatemalan meal called tamales. It takes two days to make but it is fun to prepare with the family. On Christmas Eve, around 9pm, the extended family will arrive and we will finally get to eat the delicious tamales. During this time, my mom will be rushing around trying to wrap the rest of the presents. Around 11, we will sing some Christmas songs together. My family loves to sing so it can turn into a concert. Then, we will read the Nativity story. At 11:55, we will pray and when the clock strikes midnight, we give each other lots of hugs and kisses and then open our presents. I’m happy we do not have to wait until 7 or 8 in the morning.
Gifts are not the most important thing, but I do love seeing my family open the gifts I give them. We might stay awake until 4 or 5 in the morning playing with our new gifts, talking, or enjoying some games. Do not worry! You will have a place to sleep in our home. Christmas Day we will wake up at noon (or much later), eat more tamales or pancakes whatever you want and just relax with family. I believe that Christmas is a time to really show one’s appreciation and love for their family and friends. I hope that you will be able to feel that love surround you this Christmas.
This year, I will place a present for you under the tree. That gift contains all my love and support for you in whatever you might be facing. My brother came out to the family a couple of years ago. We accepted him without a second thought because family is always first. He now has a wonderful husband that we all love. I feel his coming out really blessed and taught our family so much.
Today, I want you to know that you are part of my family and we accept you for all you are. You are special and belong in this world. There are so many people who need you. You might have not met them yet, but I believe you are meant to touch their lives through your heart, smile, and life. There are always going to be people who do not understand and might say some cruel things to you. Just smile at them and walk away knowing they are the ones missing out on getting to know such an amazing person! And, remember during those times that you are part of my family and we love you.
I feel blessed and thankful that you can be with us this Christmas. Thank you for just being you. I believe you will make a difference and already have in my life! I hope you will enjoy eating lots of tamales and getting to know my family.
Much love from your sister,
