Happy Holidays: Mama Susan

Dear Beautiful Child~

You are perfect and beautiful just the way you are. You are a child of God and are worthy of all the love the world has to give. I don’t know you, but I love you just the way you are.  I cannot imagine the hurt and the pain you have felt because the people who you love and want approval from the most, don’t accept who you are.  They will come around.  I know this because I haven’t always accepted the people in my life for who they are either.  As parents we think we know what is best, but that isn’t necessarily true. Your parents and family will learn from you. They will come to realize that you are perfect just as you are and hopefully they will support you in whatever it is you want for yourself.

I am the mother of three beautiful, radiant and very different from one another children.  They are 16, 19 and 21. This year, you will be here too in my thoughts.  I love each of them for their differences and for the special gifts they each bring to the world. It is sometimes hard to believe that they came from the same set of parents!  They are all smart and gifted in their own unique ways.  When we are all together, because of all of the different personalities it is sometimes a little crazy! Not everyone sees eye to eye and so we all have to try a little harder to put ourselves in the other’s shoes and to treat one another with respect and love .

Our holidays revolve a lot around food and having as many people together as possible.  The more the merrier! This year you will be included in our holiday, even though only virtually.  The holiday in our home begins when everyone arrives. There is always the smell of something baking in the oven and the love is palpable. We usually have our close friends and neighbors over for Christmas Eve and they have 4 children ranging from 8 to 16 years of age. It is always festive and we usually have a small gift exchange. There is usually the opening of 1 gift before bed. I love to sit by the Christmas tree at night after everyone has gone to bed and feel the energy of all of my loves coming together. It is always special for me because it is one of the few times that I get everyone sleeping under the same roof.

This year on Thanksgiving as we were saying grace we noticed that there was an empty bowl on the table.  We decided that wasn’t a good thing and so we passed the bowl and everybody put a wish, gratitude or intention into the bowl as it passed from person to person. It was a really beautiful tradition and I learned something new about everyone at the table. So often, we don’t express those things that we hold closest to our hearts and this allowed everyone to say something aloud for everyone to hear.

I loved this so much that at Christmas dinner we will do the same thing This time I am going to place my intention into the bowl that every LGBTQ person on the planet finds love and acceptance in the world, and especially from those that they need it from the most, their own families. I will  mention you, my dear holiday child, who I love and accept just as you are.

I want you to know that this holiday season I will be thinking about you. As I sit by my tree in the dark with the twinkling lights you will be in my thoughts too . I will send it through the airwaves and I hope you will feel it wherever you are.

With all of my Love,

Mama Susan
